Exploring the Diverse Techniques of Printmaking

CHRISTOPHER GENDRON
ARTMUFFIN is a Northampton based artist with art on display in and around the Pioneer Valley at various venues or pop-ups, depending on the season. He’s shown his work in galleries throughout New England, New York, Chicago, and California.
This recent series, Very Clever at Printing, refers to a line in the movie Eraserhead (David Lynch, 1977) in which Henry Spencer’s (Eraserhead) girlfriend, Mary X, refers to Henry as being, “...very clever at printing” when describing Henry’s occupation.
States the artist: “I felt it appropriate to use primarily upcycled paper products for this series since Henry worked for a printer.
I chose to work more loosely with this series whereas normally I would try to keep everything neat and tidy. Using the upcycled materials not only gave me more freedom to try new techniques, but each piece already had its own texture built into it. I was able to manipulate that texture further if I felt the need, and there wasn’t the fear of “messing it up”. I found it much more approachable knowing it was an object headed for the recycling bin versus a nice, clean, white piece of paper freshly pulled from a new pad.
Ultimately, it’s much more satisfying knowing that I’m turning old objects into something new.”
